The Abbeyfield Houses Society of Durham is seeking enthusiastic and community-minded volunteers to join our Board of Directors.

Abbeyfield Durham provides a welcoming, affordable home where older adults can live independently while enjoying companionship, shared meals, and a supportive community.

As a volunteer director, you will help guide the organization by contributing your skills, ideas, and leadership. Previous board experience is welcome but not required. We value people with diverse backgrounds who share our commitment to supporting older adults.

We are looking for people with experience or interest in:

  • Governance and strategic planning
  • Finance or accounting
  • Human resources
  • Fundraising and community engagement
  • Marketing and communications
  • Property management, construction, or maintenance
  • Legal or policy development
  • Healthcare, seniors’ services, or community development

Board members may participate:

  • In person at our Durham location
  • Online through virtual meetings
  • Through a combination of both

Job Opportunity: House Manager (Part-Time)

Location: Abbeyfield House Durham

Abbeyfield House Durham, a non-profit active seniors’ residence, is currently accepting applications for the position of House Manager (part-time, 20 hours per week).
Role Overview:
The House Manager will report to the volunteer Board of Directors and will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the residence. This includes managing staff, tenant relations, property maintenance, and ensuring tenant satisfaction. Additionally, the House Manager will collaborate with the Kitchen Manager for staffing and supply management.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee daily operations of the residence
  • Grant Writing experiende
  • Screen and approve tenants
  • Collect rent and manage tenant relations
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance with contractors
  • Work with the bookkeeper to manage budgets and expenses
  • Market vacant units and ensure timely occupancy
  • Ensure compliance with property laws and regulations
  • Collaborate with the Kitchen Manager for staffing and supply needs
